Counselling for Young People and Adolescents

Depending on the young person’s age, it may be that any initial contact will involve a parent. Seeing the young person and parent together for the first session gives us an opportunity to discuss confidentiality. Trust is extremely important and total transparency as to how we will work together is necessary.

Ways of Working

A gentle exploration of what is troubling can be helpful. With young people and adolescents, this may range from friendship problems, self-harm, low self-esteem, parental separation, divorce, bereavement, attachment issues and anxiety, amongst others.

Working creatively together in helping the young person to find new ways of coping and expressing themselves, we may use therapeutic stories, CBT, art and the sand tray to help explore thoughts and feelings. Breathing techniques and EMDR can help with self-regulation and self-soothing.

Whatever technique or mixture of techniques we use, the aim would always be to provide a supportive, trusting and professional environment in which to explore any issues.

I am DBS checked.
